Former Health Minister Yael German will be appointed Israel’s next ambassador to France, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid announced on Tuesday. In addition, Shimon Solomon, who was born in Ethiopia, will be appointed ambassador to Angola. Both German and Solomon are former Knesset members from Yesh Atid, the party that Lapid leads.
“German and Solomon will do wonderful work representing the State of Israel and its interests,” Lapid said. “These are two outstanding people who are versed in Israeli society and in Israel’s diplomatic and economic challenges.”

In June, Lapid expressed interest in removing Tzipi Hotovely, Israel’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, from her position and replacing her with German. Hotovely was a political appointment of the prime minister at the time, Benjamin Netanyahu. Foreign Ministry sources criticized cutting Hotovely’s term in London short by two years and several sources called it “legally impossible.”

German and Solomon’s diplomatic postings follow the appointment of former Tourism Minister Asaf Zamir as Israel’s Consul General in New York and of Amir Hayek, the former Israel Hotel Association president, as Israel’s first ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.
