The Haaretz Group has passed 100,000 paying digital subscribers to the websites Haaretz.co.il, TheMarker.com and Haaretz.com, a significant milestone reached by only a few newspapers in the world.

The number of subscribers to the Haaretz Group’s printed and online newspapers has been steadily rising since digital subscription was launched in March 2012.

At first, digital subscriptions were offered only for the Haaretz English edition; a year later, the move was expanded for the Hebrew edition and in 2018, TheMarker joined as well. Today, users can purchase a subscription to one of the three sites or a combined subscription that allows access to the Hebrew edition and TheMarker. In addition, subscribers to the print edition receive free access to the online versions (they are not included in the 100,000 subscription figure).

Haaretz Group sites are visited by about 11.7 million unique visitors a month. In the last decade, the Haaretz Group has invested tens of millions of shekels in recruiting new writers, expanding its coverage, changing news desk work methods, introducing interactive content delivery, upgrading technological infrastructure, and launching advanced applications.

“Our subscribers are the ones who allow us to maintain Haaretz’s unique voice and continue to invest in online content and platforms,” said Haaretz publisher, Amos Schocken. “With the decline of revenue from print advertising, alongside the massive online ad sales generated by tech giants, the only viable model for independent press is one based on paid subscription for content distributed in the printed edition or on websites and apps. I thank all the subscribers on all platforms and look forward to digital subscriber 200,000.”

In a list published in April 2021 in Press Gazette, 24 English-speaking media outlets around the world reported passing 100,000 digital subscriptions (“The 100K Club”). The most successful media organization in the world in the transition to digital subscriptions is the New York Times with 7.1 million digital subscriptions for all its products (news, food and crossword puzzles).
