A 17-year-old boy from the northern Israeli town of Shlomi was stabbed to death Monday night, and police have arrested a 15-year-old boy as the suspect.

On Tuesday, a court ordered the suspect held without bail until next Monday. His lawyers said he denies the accusations against. There is a gag order on the suspect’s name and most details of the investigation.

Police said the stabbing apparently occurred near the suspect’s home, while the two boys were quarreling. They are investigating whether the fight erupted suddenly or whether the teens had been at odds previously.

The victim, who recently graduated from high school, was stabbed in the upper body and pronounced dead on the spot.

Shlomi Mayor Gabi Neeman said the Western Galilee town’s 8,000 residents were in “deep shock.”

“This is a very unusual incident in our community,” he added. “We live together like a big family, and an incident like this shocks us all.”

The suspect’s father called the death “unnecessary,” adding, “This was kids’ nonsense. They were apparently arguing over a girl.”

He said that someone had yelled for his son to come out of the house. “I wasn’t home at the time, but I understand that he was defending himself,” the suspect’s father said.
