Israel hit a seven-month record in new COVID infection, logging almost 10,000 new cases, Health ministry data showed on Tuesday.

Over one million people have caught the virus since the pandemic erupted in Israel, and 6,864 have died from it – a figure 0.68 percent lower than that of the rest of the world. However, the number of serious cases in Israel remains stable and currently stands at 678, of which 168 are in critical condition and 123 are on ventilators.

In Israel, 1,575,898 people have received their third dose of the coronavirus vaccine, after the Health Ministry approved administering the booster shot to those aged 40 and over on Friday.

Health officials are expected to discuss expanding the campaign to include those aged 30 and up, with Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz hoping to approve the move as soon as Tuesday.

Data also reveals that an increasing number of Israelis have received their first coronavirus shot after vaccination rates declined in the summer months.

The number of Israelis getting their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine has tripled since the beginning of August, with over 10,000 Israelis receiving their first shot on Monday, compared to 3,023 on August 1.

Horowitz announced on Monday a new effort in parts of the country where vaccination rates for the first and second doses of the COVID vaccine are low, pointing to figures that show a clear correlation between economic status and willingness to get inoculated.
