The Senate confirmed Tom Nides as U.S. ambassador to Israel via voice vote on Wednesday after Republican lawmakers lifted their hold on his nomination.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who brought Nides’ nomination to the floor one day after Sen. Robert Menendez attempted to fast-track Nides’ confirmation via unanimous consent, said he was pleased the Republicans had lifted their hold on the nomination.

No details were given as to what the objections were, but Republican lawmakers have recently united in their opposition to the reopening of the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem, turning what was once assumed to be a low-hanging fruit for the Biden administration into a hot-button wedge issue and will likely cite Nides’ stated support of this policy as a reason for opposition.
