Brothers Gashau Ayala and Yehuda Darba Ayala, set two Israeli records in separate track races on Saturday.

Gashau, 25, became the first Israeli to finish the 10,000-meter race in less than 28 minutes with a time of 27:49.88, earning him fourth place in London. His time was 11 seconds faster than the previous Israeli record, set by Bukai Melda just three weeks earlier.

Yehuda, his younger brother, broke the 23-and-under Israeli record in the 5,000-meter race at a Birmingham meet with a time of 13:46.57.

Ariel Atias also set a new Israeli record in the decathlon, winning a meet in Missouri with 7,343 points. That is 112 points above the previous record set less than a month ago.

But despite Atias’ record performance, he said he felt there was a “bit of a missed opportunity” because he didn’t manage to exceed his personal best in any of the events. “It’s upsetting,” he added. “But I’ll grab the Israeli record with both hands and move on from there.”
