Keir Starmer and his deputy Angela Rayner have been cleared by Durham police of breaching lockdown rules over a beer and takeaway curry they had with staff during election campaigning last year.

The decision means both, who always said no rules were broken, will stay in post. Starmer had placed his future in the hands of the police force by pledging to resign if he was issued with a fixed-penalty notice over an incident that became known as Beergate.

It is the second time Durham police have cleared Starmer over the event that took place on 30 April last year in the office of the City of Durham MP, Mary Foy, during a byelection campaign for the nearby Hartlepool seat. After viewing video footage of the event in February, the force said it decided to take no further action.

Earlier this month Durham police put Starmer and others at the gathering under investigation over the incident after saying they had received “significant new information”.

The force said it had come under pressure from some newspapers and Conservative MPs to look at the event again.
