Israel Defense Forces chief of staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi has requested government permission to publish a book prior to the end of his tenure in January 2023.

According to Hebrew media reports, Kochavi has requested that the Ministerial Committee for Publication Permission – composed of the justice, defense and intelligence ministers – approve the unusual move.

Media reports have questioned how the head of the military found the time to write a book. The reports have cited an IDF spokesperson as saying the tome deals with “leadership matters.”

According to the public broadcaster Kan, associates of the chief of staff say Kochavi has been working on the book for a considerable period of time.

“The manuscript written by the chief of staff deals with military command leadership. The manuscript has not been edited, and it has not yet been decided whether to publish it or how it will be published, so dealing with the subject is very early and irrelevant at the moment,” an IDF spokesperson said.
