Data from the Health Ministry reveals that 90 percent of serious COVID cases on Saturday were unvaccinated patients, testifying to a protracted retreat of the fourth wave in Israel.

Nineteen out of the twenty-one serious cases reported on Saturday were unvaccinated, with one receiving all three jabs and the other partially inoculated.

There are currently 382 coronavirus patients in serious condition in Israel, half as many as last month. Of these, 193 are in a critical condition and 166 are on ventilators.

Israelis who support government more likely to get third COVID vaccine dose

Over 3.8 million people have received their third dose of the coronavirus vaccine since Israel decided to roll out the booster shots in August.

The booster shot of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine significantly reduces viral load in patients infected with the delta variant, and therefore reduces the chances of transmission, a recent Israeli study has found.

Meanwhile, the R number – the average number of people each confirmed carrier infects – has remained below 1 for over a month. However, the figure 0.77 reported on Saturday is the highest in over a week. The number of the new active cases also rose to 1,560, an increase of 520 from the day prior.

One more person also died from the virus on Saturday. The death toll since the pandemic took hold in Israel in March 2020 stands at 7,983 people.
